Demystifying the Standard Dimension Ratio (SDR)

The Standard Dimension Ratio (SDR) is the most important factor in determining the pressure capacity of an HDPE fittings. It is a simple, standardized formula: SDR = Outside Diameter / Minimum Wall Thickness. A lower SDR number means a thicker wall relative to its diameter, and therefore a higher pressure rating. For instance, an SDR11 fitting has a much higher pressure rating than an SDR17 fitting of the same diameter. This system allows for easy, consistent selection of pressure-rated components across different manufacturers.

Pressure Nominal (PN) and Its Direct Correlation to SDR

The Pressure Nominal (PN) rating is a numerical designation that directly corresponds to the SDR value and indicates the maximum internal water pressure the fitting can withstand continuously at 20°C. Common pairings include:

SDR11 = PN16 (16 bar)

SDR13.6 = PN12.5 (12.5 bar)

SDR17 = PN10 (10 bar)

For a successful fusion joint, the dimensions of the fitting must be precisely within the tolerances defined by international standards such as ISO 4427. An out-of-spec outer diameter or wall thickness can lead to poor fusion, bead rollover issues in butt fusion, or gaps in electrofusion, resulting in a weak joint. Reputable manufacturers provide certification confirming their fittings’ dimensional compliance.

Creating a Cohesive System: Matching Pipe and Fittings

The golden rule is absolute consistency: the pipe and fitting must have the same Outside Diameter (OD), SDR, and PN rating. Mixing and matching components from different specification systems (e.g., an SDR11 pipe with an SDR13.6 fitting) is not permissible nd will guarantee system failure.
