Installing a brass angle valve is manageable. Proper steps prevent leaks. This guide will help you succeed. Ensure you have the right tools.
Gather Your Tools and Materials
You will need an adjustable wrench. Get a roll of PTFE tape. Have a tube cutter for clean cuts. Keep a bucket and towels ready. Wear safety glasses for protection.
Step 1: Shut Off the Water Supply
Locate your main water shut-off valve. Turn it clockwise until it stops. Open faucets to drain the pipes. This relieves all water pressure. Safety is your first priority.
Step 2: Prepare the Water Pipe
Measure and mark the pipe. Use a tube cutter for a clean end. Remove any burrs with a file. Wipe the pipe end clean. A smooth surface ensures a good seal.
Step 3: Apply the PTFE Tape
Wrap the tape on the valve’s male threads. Always wrap in a clockwise direction. Do five to seven layers. This creates a watertight seal. Press the tape firmly into the threads.
Step 4: Connect the Valve
Screw the valve onto the pipe by hand. Ensure it is straight and aligned. Then use a wrench for the final turn. Be careful not to over-tighten. Over-tightening can damage threads.
Step 5: Attach the Supply Line
Connect the flex hose to the valve. Hand-tighten the compression nut. Then give it a quarter-turn with a wrench. Check that it is secure. Avoid using excessive force here.
Final Step: Check for Leaks
Slowly turn the main water back on. Open the new angle valve fully. Inspect all connections closely. Look for any dripping water. Tighten slightly if you find a leak.
